What is Gomoku?
Gomoku is a two-player abstract strategy board game traditionally played on a 15×15 or 19×19 Go board. Players alternate placing black and white stones on intersections, and the first to align five stones in a row — horizontally, vertically, or diagonally — wins.
Is Gomoku the same as Five in a Row?
Yes. "Gomoku" (五目並べ) is the Japanese name meaning "five points." "Wuziqi" (五子棋) is the Chinese name meaning "five-in-a-row chess." They refer to the same game.
Is Gomoku a solved game?
On the standard 15×15 board, strong AI engines and mathematical analysis have shown that Black wins with perfect play under freestyle rules. That is why professional variants like Renju add restrictions on Black to balance the game.
